‘I know that I am praying when I sing’ – NSSP voices from the capital

The NSSP in London is led by the Archdioceses of Southwark and Westminster. Together, they deliver singing in 37 state schools every week for curriculum singing and after-school choirs.

The impact has been appreciated by headteachers, including at Sacred Heart Primary School:

‘Our school is beginning its second year as part of the Westminster Schools Singing Programme. When our Choral Director, Jaison, started last September, we instantly saw the impact he had. One of our main aims was to enhance the use of music within our school Masses and liturgies and, without doubt, the Catholic life of our school has been transformed. In our recent RE inspection, pupils spoke to the inspectors about their enjoyment of singing hymns and one said, “I know that I am praying when I sing.”’

Children from the Southwark Singing Programme – with children from primary schools in Vauxhall, Southwark, Welling, Thamesmead, Rotherhithe, Borough, Walworth and Peckham – recently recorded Mass parts and hymns at St George’s Cathedral. Lord, I lift your name on high was one of our favourites.
