Hexham & Newcastle Schools Singing Programme Launch

We are delighted to that Eimear Hurley has been appointed as Choral Director for the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. This new role, generously funded by the National Schools Singing Programme, will help develop and enrich songs of praise across the diocesan family—starting in our schools.

As part of this exciting initiative, Eimear will work with children across the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, helping to establish two new school choirs—one for girls and one for boys. In time, these choirs will become a regular and joyful part of our liturgical life at the Cathedral Church of St Mary, Newcastle.

Catherine Craig, Director of Education, said:
“We know that our Catholic primary schools support a wealth of talent and enthusiasm across singing and musical performances and we want to harness that and give the children the opportunity to challenge themselves and to be part of an exciting new project.”

Eimear added:
“Singing is accessible to all. It is expressive and powerful and teaches young people to listen, to engage, to work together, to be resilient and to have confidence in their ability. I am looking forward to meeting the children and their teachers and sharing their many talents with others.”

Bishop Stephen welcomed the appointment:
“Singing is a joyous expression of our faith and a wonderful appreciation of the gifts we have been given. I have no doubt our diocesan family will delight in hearing our new choirs raise the roof from our Cathedral!”

Benjamin Saunders, who is the National Schools Singing Programme’s Lead Consultant said:
“The NSSP is already flourishing across the UK and we look forward to this new programme unleashing the power of singing and music to transform lives.”

Further endorsement for the establishment of the new programme within our diocese comes from the Patron of the National Schools Singing Programme, the renowned composer and conductor, Sir John Rutter CBE, “I am delighted to learn that more schools are now joining the National Schools Singing Programme. This is a marvellous development and gives the gift of music to more children – a gift which I know they will carry through their whole lives.”

We look forward to hearing more from Eimear and the children as this wonderful new chapter unfolds.
