Danny Townley appointed Director of the Schools Singing Programme
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Danny Townley as Director of the Schools Singing Programme in the Archdiocese of Liverpool. Danny is a passionate educator, choral animateur, and vocal specialist with a deep commitment to nurturing young singers. He helped to establish the Archdiocese’s Schools Singing Programme in 2022 and has played a key role in its growth, with the SSP now delivering weekly singing sessions to over 3,500 children across 30 schools in the archdiocese.
Danny has worked in music education for over 10 years including for Sky Music Hub as part of the Vocal Projects Team with Stuart Overington and Suzzie Vango, as the Vocal Tutor for the boy choristers of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, and as the Choral Director at Scarisbrick Hall School.
Born in Liverpool, Danny read Music at the University of Sheffield, where he was a first-study cellist under Marie Bitlloch of the Elias Quartet and the late Peter Cropper of the Lindsay Quartet. He began his professional singing career as a lay clerk and, for over 15 years, has sung in the cathedral choirs in Gloucester, Guildford, and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King. Danny is also a founding member of, and regular soloist with, Liverpool Bach Collective and has a keen interest in early music.
‘It’s a real honour to be appointed Director of the Schools Singing Programme. I’ve seen first-hand the transformative power of singing in our schools and communities — not just musically, but in building confidence, connection, and faith. I’m excited to build on the strong foundations already in place, and to help even more young people discover their voices and experience the joy of singing together.’
