Children sing as Pilgrims of Hope in Newry Cathedral
What a joyous occasion in Newry Cathedral on Wednesday 30th April when P5 children from St Ronan’s, St Clare’s Abbey, St Patrick’s the Meadow, St Colman’s, St Joseph’s Convent, St Malachy’s Carnagat, St Malachy’s Camlough and St Joseph’s Meigh primary schools all came together to give worship in song. Given that this is a Jubilee Year, the theme for this singing liturgy was Pilgrims of Hope.
Archbishop Eamon Martin led the liturgy in song and in prayer, gloriously singing the verses of the song that was composed for this special year, simply entitled Pilgrims of Hope. The Cathedral resounded with beautiful melodies, harmonies and readings all based on this special Jubilee year. All ten hymns were linked to this special theme by a representative from every school who introduced one piece or led the congregation in a prayer. During the liturgy there were moments of quiet reflection, hope and pure joy while the congregation took part in prayer responses.
The children’s singing was beautifully complimented by supportive musicians namely Sara-Jane Kelly on piano, Joanna Doran on violin and Eamon McGarrity on percussion. The liturgy concluded with a resounding version of a worship anthem where the children showcased their ability to maintain parts while singing.
P5 children have been receiving weekly singing sessions as part of the highly successful Schools Singing Programme delivered by Orla Nugent and Sara-Jane Kelly. Since Christmas they have enjoyed ten sessions of both liturgical and secular songs and with an emphasis on fun while also learning about links to curricular RE and Music at a KS2 level. They also considered the importance of good singing technique. This programme is for whole classes and therefore all abilities are welcomed.
