‘A marked increase in the children’s confidence’ – NSSP voices from across the North
Alongside large NSSP programmes in Newcastle, Liverpool and Sheffield, the Dioceses of Middlesbrough, Salford and Shrewsbury have thriving singing programmes serving 59 schools. Children in the Preston area are served by the NSSP programme at Stonyhurst.
‘We have observed a significant improvement in the children’s ability to express themselves verbally, which is a fantastic outcome. Alongside this, there has been a marked increase in the children’s confidence, especially when performing. Given that many of our pupils come from disadvantaged backgrounds, having the opportunity to be taught by someone like Mr Spencer school setting is incredibly aspirational for them.’ – Deputy Headteacher, Grange Primary School, Preston
The Diocese of Salford launched the Salford Songbook, inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, earlier this year, bringing together 1,400 children in The Lowry with composer Hannah King and NSSP Patron Sir John Rutter.
‘I’m delighted to be able to promote the SSP in this Diocese. It’s a great opportunity for the children to feel they are taking part, to recognise their skills, and to join in the celebration in church. I hope it will be something that many of our schools and parishes will want to take part in, for the benefit of the Diocese as a whole.’ – Rt Rev John Arnold, Bishop of Salford
‘Through the project, the children are being taught to sing in their head voices, something that is lacking generally in singing education in mainstream schools. They are learning how to reach high notes easily and many of them are starting to make a clear and pure sound in their high vocal range. The link the school now has with the Minster is invaluable … and is allowing the Minster to widen its reach to include local families.’ – Teacher at St Barnabas Church of England Primary School, York
