Danny Townley Appointed in the Archdiocese of Liverpool
Originally from Liverpool, Danny studied music at the University of Sheffield. Primarily a cellist at the time, he studied under the tutelage of Marie Bitlloch of the Elias Quartet and Peter Cropper of the Lindsay Quartet. After leaving university, Danny switched his focus towards singing as a counter-tenor, moving to Gloucester Cathedral to take up a Choral Scholarship under Adrian Partington. Here, he took part in Three Choirs’ Festivals in Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester, performing a variety of large-scale choral works with the Philharmonia and conductors such as Sir Roger Norrington and Stephen Layton. From Gloucester, Danny then moved to Guildford Cathedral to become a Lay-Clerk. Here, he spent two years working under Katherine Dienes-Williams, singing with the RPO and performing in world premieres by John Rutter and Will Todd.
Since moving back to Liverpool in 2012, Danny has been a Lay-Clerk at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King where he was also the boy choristers’ singing teacher for many years. In this time, he has featured as a soloist on live broadcasts on BBC Radio 2, 3 and 4 and performed in a variety of large-scale choral works with conductors including James MacMillan.
He is founding member and soloist with the Liverpool Bach Collective under Phillip Duffy; his voice has previously been described by the ‘Mystery Worshipper’ as “superb and heavenly.”
Away from performing, Danny is a sought-after choral animateur, vocal tutor and children’s choir trainer. Over the years, he has worked with Sky Music Hub, Scarisbrick Hall School, Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir and Children’s Choir. Danny is delighted to have taken up the position of Choral Director and is excited to build and grow the Archdiocese of Liverpool Schools Singing Programme.
