NSSP Reaches 40,000 Children Weekly as UK Expansion Accelerates
The National Schools Singing Programme now delivers weekly curriculum singing to over 40,000 state school pupils across 35 partner organisations, supporting the National Plan for Music Education while building direct pathways into cathedral and church choirs. Recent national expansion has seen participation in secondary schools more than double, historic Anglican parish churches join the network, and the publication of acclaimed new primary tutor books for organ and accordion.
Participation in secondary schools has more than doubled over the past six months. This growth nurtures young tenors and basses through changing adolescent voices, helping secure the future of the UK’s SATB choral tradition.
Originally launched across Catholic dioceses and Anglican cathedrals, the programme is now expanding into major civic parish churches serving areas of socio-economic need. Recent additions include Boston Parish Church (Lincolnshire), St Mary Redcliffe (Bristol), and St Editha’s Church (Tamworth).
Developed through the Diocese of Leeds Keyboard Studies Programme, the primary organ tutor book Fingers and Feet (published with the RCO and supported by The Vinehill Trust) has drawn stellar reviews in Organists’ Review and Church Music Quarterly. Alongside it, the digital Leeds Accordion Method (with Moonhouse Music) enables classroom melodica pupils to progress to accordion and cathedral organ tuition.
