Third annual NSSP Conference hosted in Leeds
This week, over 60 Choral Directors and schools singing programme managers from Catholic dioceses and Anglican cathedrals across the UK gathered at Hinsley Hall in Leeds for the third annual NSSP Conference. The conference provided a platform for delegates to exchange ideas, share best practices, and deepen their understanding of effective teaching strategies and making progress with children’s voices.
The conference began with a session on “Managing Behavior in the Classroom and in the Hall,” led by Peter Knight, Deputy Director of Education at the Archdiocese of Cardiff, and Sarah-Marie Jones, Headteacher of St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School. Participants gained valuable insights into creating the ideal learning environment.
Dr Rebecca Berkley from the University of Reading delved into “Progression in Learning in the National Schools Singing Programme,” shedding light on the importance of structured learning pathways in music education.
Attendees then had the opportunity for a guided observation of a whole-class Year 3 singing session at Holy Rosary and St Anne’s Catholic Primary School. Led by Laura Steelyard, Assistant Director of the Diocese of Leeds Schools Singing Programme, this first-hand experience provided practical techniques for integrating the music curriculum into a singing session. Liz McDonagh-Smith, the Headteacher, emphasised the significance of external music programs in enriching students’ learning experiences.
“I departed feeling invigorated and motivated, fully equipped to embrace the challenges of the upcoming term. The selection of speakers and school sessions was not only helpful but also deeply inspiring.” – Choral Director
One of the highlights of the conference was a singing workshop led by the renowned composer John Rutter and focusing on his new Missa Brevis. Mass for the Feast of St Joseph was sung by the delegates and the Leeds Cathedral Senior Girls, Senior Boys, Schools Scholars and Choral Scholars, with John Rutter conducting his Missa Brevis and other items led by Thomas Leech and one of Leeds Cathedral’s Enhanced Choral Scholars, Katie Ryding.
Suzzie Vango, co-author of how to make your choir sound awesome, led a practical session on encouraging vocal progress in children. Suzzie equipped delegates with a series of ‘decision-making songs’ to empower children as they develop their vocal skills.
Jo Clunie from The Vinehill Trust led the final Q&A session on fundraising, providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of developing a sustainable music education programme.
